Writing from the Deeper Self is a unique approach to writing that starts from your inner experience, called in by your heart, and only later finds its way into words. Because this process accesses deep inner knowing, it is trustworthy (you don't have to ask, "Is it good?" because your reference point is within you), healing, and fulfilling.

Naomi Rose, M.A., is a Book Developer based in Oakland, CA who works with aspiring book-writers in person, or by phone & email, encouraging & deeply supporting them to write the books of their heart. She has over 30 years experience in the publications field, as well as graduate work in psychology and a commitment to the healing process. She was awarded the "Elite Service Award" by, and chosen "#1 Editor and Book Developer in San Francisco."

A Brief Hello

Summer caught me working more than playing, and so this issue is actually still a work-in-progress. I meant it to be illustrated with sketches at varying stages of development ~ I do mean sketches, visual sketches ~ to illustrate in more 3-dimensional reality analogies to the more invisible, internal process of writing.

But I gave myself too time-consuming a challenge. (Simplicity is still a work in progress.) And so what's here is just the start, the bare bones. I hope to come back to this and flesh it out before long. Then it will appear on a later page of the Writing from the Deeper Self newsletter.

I hope my sense is true ~ that these behind-the-scenes looks are as valuable, or more, to you, seeking to possibly write your own book, than if I were to only put forth the final "perfection." Maybe I'm just projecting, since I personally love being behind the scenes at almost any process of artistic creation. But I think you might find it illuminating, too.

A bientot,

Naomi Rose

How Seeing the Creative Process Take Place in the Simultaneous, Relational World of Visual Art Can Inspire Your Writing

Recently, I saw a dance movie, including choreography and dance rehearsals. Although I am not a dancer, I enjoyed watching that very visible journey from wish/idea to fulfilled reality. When you see human beings bending, leaping, twirling ~ and then doing it over and over again, until it really gels, until it looks perfect and effortless ~ you have no doubt that there is such a thing as the "creative process": a "nothing" that, with diligent attention and care, becomes a beautiful and meaningful "something."

But when you are a writer, or hope to be, and you would like to be inspired by seeing someone write ~ well, that doesn't get to happen. Writing is such a solitary, internal act that although the results can be shared, even while the work is in progress, the actual moment of creating in writing can be known internally but not shared with others. So if you wanted to see how writers create, you'd have to (a) do it yourself, and/or (b) work backwards from someone else's completed writing, perhaps using the author's interviews and explanations as a guide.

So for this reason, in this newsletter I want to share with you my process of creating visual art, for a book I wrote that will be coming out soon, because here there is something to show. And I'm trusting that if you follow along with me on this visual-art journey, something will give you an "Aha!" that you can translated into writing, and into writing a book.

~ ~ ~

What's wonderful about coming along with a visual artist in the act of creation, in the act of unfoldment from wish/idea into full manifestation, is that ~ unlike writing ~ a drawing or painting is conceived and viewed simultaneously, whereas writing is written sequentially. A painter facing a canvas can see everything on that canvas at once, and therefore knows that every element must relate to every other element. So there may be a lot of trying things out, and tweaking, as one element comes into greater clarity and the other elements need to be adjusted. And while it's true that all this rough-drafting and fine-tuning happens within the painter's mind and heart and soul (and even body), anyone who's watching can get to see the results of the painter's inspiration and shifting decisions, right as they happen. You are privy to the process.

And so, in the oldest way of learning ~ by watching and osmosis; by opening to what's in front of you in a receptive, non-mental way ~ you get to know something deep and true about the creative process itself, simply by being present to someone else's embodiment of it. This, then, becomes part of you (even if only in a back-burner way); and when it's your turn to create "something" from "nothing," that precedent for moving into the unknown and relating to it intimately as it unfolds will be there for you, inside you.

So here we go.

The fruits of my work as a Book Developer are threaded through everything in this newsletter (and in all the WFDS newsletters). All the products and projects are exciting ~ but the real heart is in the book development: the process of bringing forth from a client's deep heart the book that awaits birth, there.

To me, the process is so essential. It's never about cranking out a product, even though that's how most of us learned to write in school (and at work). It's always about listening inside more and more deeply, until that which lies at the core of your being has a way to make itself known to you. Writing is the way we make that known.

What does this say about Writing from the Deeper Self? That it's not only for the purpose of writing a book, but is a deeply spiritual process that your own being seeks to make real. If you did not benefit from the writing process, I would not be doing this work, because it's that evocation of what's real in you that brings me the most joy. Later on, when all this process is complete and you have a book in hand, the book itself will evoke for your readers a similar experience of being in contact with what is real in them. This is the case no matter what the subject of your book. If you have a longing to write a book that comes from who you really are inside, this is the place to do it.

Not only is she able to deeply listen to me and fully grasp my ideas and intentions but she is also wonderfully talented at helping me clarify and plan out the structure and scope of my book.
