My Copywriting Process

When you work with me it’s like working with a good friend. Still professional, mind you. No shots of tequila on the first day. But you’re going to find someone who’s always on-point, and who you can feel comfortable sharing all your ideas with.

Seriously, you’re gonna love it. As far as the process goes, we might tweak a few things along the way, but it should look a lot like this:

The Introduction/Discovery:

It’s kind of like a first date, because there are going to be plenty of questions!

We’ll jump on a call (Zoom), or have coffee (if you’re local). We’ll find out what you really need, and if I’m the right person to provide it. If that’s a yes, we’ll start digging into your goals for the project. What are your services? Who are your customers? What is your why? We’ll talk about project parameters and scope, and figure out what kind of timeline we’re working with. Open and honest communication is the name of the game.

Let’s do this:

Once I’ve got a solid idea of what you need and the results you’re looking for, I’ll draw up a project agreement and send it your way. When everybody’s happy I’ll invoice for 50%. Once that’s taken care of and the signed agreement is in place, it’s time to get to work.

Research:

It all starts with research. This is the most important step. I’m going to need to know plenty about your business and your customers. Depending on the project, I might ask for any customer research you’ve conducted previously, brand or style guidelines you’d like me to work with, contact info for other people on your team I might need to talk to, wireframes, if that’s relevant—the whole shebang. I’ll be doing independent research, as well. I’m going to be prepared like nobody’s business. Nothing but the best for you, my friend!

Writing:

This is where the magic happens. I’ll be using every bit of my talent and know-how to craft creative, valuable, and compelling copy that’s going to connect you with your audience like never before.

Writing is a solitary process, but this is still something of a team effort. If it’s a longer project, I’ll keep you posted and I may pop in from time to time with additional questions. You’re encouraged to do the same. Remember: Open and honest communication. Once I’ve got a solid first draft ready, we’ll get together again.

Review:

I think it’s essential that we take the time to sit down together and read the copy. Does anyone else need to sign off on this? They should sit in, too. It’s the best way to ensure a clear understanding of where we’re at and where we need to go. We don’t want anything getting lost in translation, and we want the final draft to be perfect. I want your honest and thoughtful feedback.

Revision:

I’ll take my notes from our review session and get back to work. I’ll do up to two rounds of revision, but usually, we’re going to be so much on the same page that I can’t help but get it right the first time. Still, at the end of the day, you’re satisfaction is the only thing that counts.

Delivery!

After final approval and payment, I’ll release the copy and you’ll reap the rewards. Of course, I’ll be around for a final consultation where we can talk about how the project went. And I’d love to see the formatted version so I can make sure the whole thing is doing the best job for you. Of course, if the time is right, we can even start talking about what’s next!
