Why Those “Healthy” Dog Treats May Not Be So Healthy
Labels on dog treats – and pet food in general, can be misleading thanks to toothless regulations. And believe me, some pet food companies are happy to take advantage.
The following is a cautionary tale. Luckily, our story has a happy ending, but you’ll want to pay close attention to the ways you can avoid a scare like ours.
We adopted our first dog, Yukon, a few years back, and were determined to do everything right. We did all the right research. We asked all the right questions.
But we weren’t diligent in our research, and what seemed like natural, healthy dog treats were anything but. I truly hope that you don’t make the same mistake we made.

The Perfect Puppy
We got Yukon when she was ten weeks old. She was – and is! – a beautiful Siberian Husky with brown eyes and a gorgeous silver and white coat. She was playful, happy, and immediately became everyone’s new best friend. You know how it is with a puppy…you can’t help falling in love.
Yukon was our first, and we were determined to do everything right. I bought books, talked to the vet, and spent a crazy amount of time doing online research: Crate or puppy bed? What toys are safe? What’s the best training method? How often should she get a bath? What’s the best and healthiest dog food?
I was armed with all the information I needed to give Yukon a great life. Or so I thought.
The Hidden Danger
Everything was great for a few years. Right off the bat Yukon was part of the family. She radiated love, and could always put a smile on your face. She was smart, too! OK, potty-training
wasn’t exactly a walk in the park – is it ever? – but once we got over that hurdle, it was smooth sailing.
Then it all went wrong.
Seemingly overnight Yukon went from being a happy dog – always ready to play – to moping around with her head down, sad eyes, no energy. She couldn’t get excited about anything. Not walks, games, or even treats. She was laying down all day, but didn’t wasn’t sleeping well. And she was having a lot of trouble going to the bathroom. It was heartbreaking to see.
Two days of this was all I could take. Our usual vet was booked, so I found another who could get us in.
When I explained what was happening, the first thing the new vet asked was…what are you feeding her?
Well, we’d been feeding her the same food and treats our original vet recommended. And mind you, these were among the most popular – and expensive – on the market. The new vet simply shook her head and laid down a startling dose of truth.
Not So Healthy Dog Treats
Some manufacturers, she said, will label their food and treats as “Natural” and “Healthy,’ but that can be misleading. You see, there’s almost never a full list of ingredients on pet food packaging. The FDA doesn’t re- quire it, so it’s easy for companies to get away with. They might use SOME natural ingredients, and then add carcinogenic chemicals and preservatives with potentially disastrous results.
For instance, the treats we’d been giving Yukon – that said “Natural” right on the box – actually contained a dangerous preservative known as BHA. The American Cancer Society considers BHA to be a “reasonably anticipated carcinogenic” that can promote tumors! And we’d been giving them to her for years!
It was hard to believe that just a handful of treats could have this kind of effect on a big ol’ Husky. But the vet told me that just like with people, when you do something unhealthy for long enough, sooner or later it’s likely to catch up to you.
These unnatural preservatives, I learned, can cause poor digestion, skin and coat issues, irregular bowel movements, and depression. Exactly what Yukon was going through! I almost stared crying, knowing that I’d been feeding my poor dog poison. How could I have missed that?
Some Rules to Follow
The vet recommended switching to real, all-natural dog food and treats from now on. And she left me with these very important reminders:
1. Don’t trust the label. Even well-known pet food companies don’t always tell the truth. Do your research! The PetMD Ingredient and Label Guide is a good place to start.
2. Look for natural preservatives in your dog treats. Especially Vitamin E. A company that uses Vitamin E as a preservative has no need for artificial chemicals.
3. Don’t beat yourself up if you didn’t get it right the first time. (I wasted plenty of time being mad at myself.) Those labels can be misleading. And sometimes it’s intentional. The natural instinct in good people is to trust, and when a big company abuses that trust, it’s not our fault.
A Happy Ending
I took the vets advice, and I wound up switching to Diamond Naturals for her dog food, and Puptastic Nat- urals for treats. And you don’t even know it’s happening! The problems develop unseen, until it’s too late! Just like a person with an unhealthy sweet tooth doesn’t get diabetes overnight, your dog isn’t going to get sick the first time you feed them a treat with chemical ingredients! But it’s coming.
Sometimes the Truth is Hidden
The tricky part is, if you don’t know what your feeding your dog, how do you know if you need to make a change? Labels can be misleading. Sometimes on purpose! Pet food labels don’t have to follow that same FDA rules!
